Description

The Goerend 68RFE channel plate features an exhaust hole that drains oil from the rear of the pressure regulator (PR) valve, similar to the dump valve design used in our 47RE/48RE valve bodies. Depending on the vehicle's calibration, this exhaust hole must either remain open or be plugged.
 
The exhaust hole must remain OPEN when using 2019–2024 tuneless kit applications or any aftermarket tuning that commands 220–225 PSI line pressure. The exhaust hole must be PLUGGED with screw installed when using stock or near-stock tuning.
 
Some aftermarket tuning may require installation of a mechanical pressure gauge to verify that the calibration is actually commanding 220–225 PSI.
 
When using higher-pressure calibrations, a modified spacer plate is also required to properly feed the circuit. The Goerend spacer plate is already pre-modified, eliminating the need for any additional spacer plate modifications.
 
When the Goerend channel plate is paired with the Goerend spacer plate, the spacer plate blocks feed oil to this circuit. As a result, even if the plug is removed, there is no feed oil available to exhaust.
 
Following these guidelines ensures the pressure regulator circuit functions correctly and allows the transmission to achieve the intended line pressure for your specific calibration.

68RFE Channel Plate: Better Fit, Better Finish, and In-Truck Pressure Testing
 
Diagnosing a transmission accurately comes down to information. The more points you can monitor under real operating conditions, the better chance you have of identifying what is actually happening inside the unit.

Think of it like monitoring a shop with security cameras. Four cameras can tell you something, but 20 cameras positioned throughout the building give you a much clearer picture. The same principle applies when we dyno and diagnose transmissions at Goerend Transmission. Our test equipment allows us to monitor numerous hydraulic circuits simultaneously, including areas that normally aren't accessible through the factory external pressure port.

The 68RFE is a good example. From the factory, there is only one external location available for taking a pressure reading with the transmission assembled. However, the valve body itself has several additional pressure-test locations that can provide valuable information about individual hydraulic circuits.

On a standalone valve body tester, accessing those ports is straightforward. With the valve body removed, gauges can be connected directly to the test locations. Once the valve body is installed in the truck, however, the transmission pan covers those ports. Removing the pan provides access, but the transmission can no longer be operated normally because the pan is needed to contain the fluid.

That's why the factory developed a dedicated plastic test pan. The factory 68RFE test pan incorporates passages that extend upward and seal against the pressure-test locations in the factory valve body/channel casting. External gauges can then be connected to those passages, allowing a technician to monitor multiple hydraulic circuits while the complete transmission is assembled and operating in the vehicle.

That capability is valuable because a valve body can test correctly by itself while a problem only becomes apparent once it is installed and interacting with the rest of the transmission. Being able to monitor several pressures in the vehicle gives the technician a much more complete picture of what is actually happening.

The problem is that not every aftermarket channel plate is designed to accommodate the factory test pan.

Goerend's 68RFE channel plate is specifically machined so the factory plastic test pan can be used with our assembly. The necessary pockets are machined into the plate to provide clearance and allow the test pan to properly interface with the pressure-test locations.

This patented design means technicians can install the Goerend channel plate, install the factory test pan, connect their gauges, and monitor the valve body's hydraulic circuits while the transmission is still installed in the truck.

If a transmission never develops a problem, that capability may never be needed. But when you're troubleshooting an unusual hydraulic issue, having access to multiple pressure readings can make diagnosis considerably easier. Instead of having one window into the hydraulic system, you have several.

Fit and finish were also major priorities when developing our channel plate. The 68RFE uses dowel pins to precisely locate components during assembly. Those dowels establish alignment between mating pieces, which means the dimensions of the corresponding holes in the plate are critical.

When the dowel-pin bores are properly sized, the components should align naturally and assemble without unnecessary force. If a bore is undersized, assembly becomes much more difficult. Instead of positioning the pieces by hand and installing the fasteners normally, the bolts may have to pull the components together and force the plate over the dowel.

That's not how we want these parts to assemble. Our goal is simple: the parts should fit the way they're supposed to fit.

Our decision to manufacture our own 68RFE plate channel plate came from practical experience. We wanted better control over fit and finish, dowel-pin alignment, machining quality, product availability, and compatibility with the factory diagnostic test pan. Producing the component ourselves allows us to control those details while maintaining inventory so builders can get the parts when they need them.

A channel plate may look like a relatively simple component, but the details matter. It needs to fit correctly, align correctly, have consistent machining, and be available when a builder needs it. And when a technician is chasing a difficult 68RFE hydraulic problem, having the ability to use the factory test pan without removing the valve body can provide diagnostic information that would otherwise be unavailable.

The Goerend 68RFE channel plate combines controlled fit and finish with dependable availability and a patented design that allows the factory diagnostic test pan to be used while the valve body is installed in the transmission. For most customers, that diagnostic feature may never be necessary. For the technician chasing a difficult hydraulic problem, it can make all the difference.
